Iwo Jima / WWII Memorial Coin – A Story of Eternal Respect and Marine Legacy
This is a commemorative challenge coin honoring the Battle of Iwo Jima (February–March 1945) during World War II—one of the most iconic and costly engagements in Marine Corps history. The design centers on the famous Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima photograph by Joe Rosenthal, showing six Marines planting the American flag atop Mount Suribachi. Design Breakdown (Front Side): • Antique bronze/gold base with black enamel ring and rope-twist border—evokes a medal of honor, timeless and solemn. • Central emblem: The flag-raising on Suribachi in high-relief—six Marines struggling to plant the flagpole on volcanic ash, with the U.S. flag waving proudly above. • Outer ring text: WORLD WAR II 1941–1945 arched at the top, IWO JIMA curved at the bottom in raised lettering—framing the battle’s dates and name. • Overall feel: Heavy, dignified, and reverent—no flashy colors, just the raw power of the image that became a symbol of Marine sacrifice and American resolve. The Real Story This Coin Tells This coin is a tribute to the Marines who fought and died on Iwo Jima—over 6,800 killed, nearly 20,000 wounded in 36 days of brutal combat against entrenched Japanese forces. The flag-raising photo (February 23, 1945) became one of the most reproduced images in history, symbolizing courage, teamwork, and victory at tremendous cost. Three of the six flag-raisers (Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon Block, PFC Franklin Sousley) were killed before the battle ended.
